India being the world’s fastest growing mobile phone market has attracted much of the capital investments in the country’s telecom industry. If you just look at the numbers released by the TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India), the number of telephone subscribers in the country raised from 653.92 million in May 2010 to 671.69 million on June 30, 2010. That’s a staggering 17.77 million new users within the span of a month. On this note, let’s checkout the top 10 Indian telecom service providers in India, according to a latest survey conducted by Voice and Data, a CyberMedia group journal.

Bharti Airtel topped the list by posting a growth rate of 5% in 2009-10 fiscal year with a revenue of Rs. 388 billion. With more than 137 million subscribers throughout India, Airtel is India’s largest telecom operator and fifth largest telecom operator in terms of number of subscribers.

2. BSNL:
The state owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) stood at #2 position by posting a revenue of Rs. 302.4 billion even though there was a dip in its revenue (at 14%) for the second time in a row. BSNL now has over 71.68 million wireline subscribers alone in India.

3. Vodafone Essar:
Vodafone Essar recorded a growth rate of 13.7% with a revenue of Rs. 232 billion in 2009-10 to become the third largest telecom service provider in India. Vodafone has over 106.34 million customers in India.

4. Reliance Communications
Reliance Communications(Rcom) posted a negative growth of 3.5 % in 2009-10 with a revenue of Rs. 221.3 billion. The company has over 100 million subscribers in India.

5. Idea Cellular
Standing at #5 position with a revenue of Rs. 113.9 billion is Aditya Birla Group’s Idea Cellular. Idea Cellular offers GSM services in India with a customer bases of 67 million. It’s worthy to note here that Idea was the first mobile operator in India to introduce GPRS and EDGE services in the country.

6. Tata Communications
Tata Communications recorded a revenue of Rs. 110 billion. The Tata Communications includes one of the world’s most advanced and largest submarine networks and aTier-1 IP network and almost 1 million sq.feet of data center and collocation space around the globe.

7. Tata Teleservices
Tala Teleservices, which include five brands Tata Indicome, Tata Docomo (GSM), Virgin Mobile, Tata Walky (fixed wireless phones) & Tata Photon (wireless mobile broadband) posted a revenue of Rs. 69 billion in 2009-10. Tata Tele is the first company to launch CDMA service in India.

8. Aircel
Aircel made a merry during the FY 2009-10 by recording a growth rate of 37.2% with a revenue of Rs. 47 billion. Aircel first started its operations in Tamil Nadu in 1999 and with continous expansion, the company now operates in 21 circles all over India.
9. MTNL
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) reported a dip of revenue in FY 2009-10 with a revenue of Rs. 36.5 billion. The company now holds a customer base of 8.06 million in the two metro cities Delhi and Mumbai.

10. TTML
Tata Teleservices Maharashtra Limited (TTML) is part of Tata Tele which exists only in Maharashtra, Goa and Mumbai circles. TTML posted a revenue of Rs. 23 billion to stand at #10 in the list. TTML has over 600,000 subscribers.
