Google has cancelled its much anticipated Android event scheduled on October 29 in New York City due to Hurricane Sandy. Sandy will likely hit the East Coast on October 29 or 30. But Microsoft’s Windows phone 8 event will go on today as planned earlier in San Francisco.
Google announced the cancellation of that event Saturday morning in an e-mail to invitees: “We are canceling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy. We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more. Stay safe and dry, The Android Team.”
Sandy is expected to bring potentially life-threatening storm surges on the coast ranging from several feet to potentially as high as 11-feet in the Long Island Sound area of New York, said Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Center.
Over few months ago, there were numerous rumors that Google will unveil its latest flagship Android handset “The Nexus 4” built by LG; a new flagship tablet “The Nexus 10” entitled as iPad killer built by Samsung and an update to its Android operating system pushing it from 4.1 Jelly Bean to 4.2, which is believed to be called Key Lime Pie. Another expected device is the updated Nexus 7 with 32GB storage and 3G capabilities.
Slightly more than a week ago, Google sent out invitations to its Android playground with the tagline “The playground is open” on the same date as Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 event, October 29. This is the second year in a row Google had to cancel a Nexus launch. Google canceled the Galaxy Nexus announcement last year shortly after Steve Jobs died as a tribute. Till now Google hasn’t decided when the event will be rescheduled.
