Heads up Android developers. Hot on the heels of the official retail availability of the Nexus 4, Nexus 10, and Nexus 7 3G, the chief Android release engineer, Jean-Baptiste Queru (JBQ) has confirmed that Android 4.2 just finished hitting the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository.
This release will be tagged as android-4.2_r1 and the new build number will be JOP40C. Google’s Android open source guru, JBQ has stated that Nexus 10 is the most compatible AOSP device to work on Android 4.2, but the GPU code is open sourced. Due to the lack of the licensing right for the GSM stack, both the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 3G devices are currently off the list for AOSP.
It’s sad to report that there will be further support in AOSP for Motorola Xoom and Nexus S. As of now, both these devices won’t be upgraded to Android 4.2, and will probably left at Android 4.1.2. JBQ has also confirmed “I can’t comment about the future of Nexus S and Xoom, sorry.”
As we reported earlier, Google has released the Android 4.2 factory images for Nexus 7 (3G + Wi-Fi), Nexus 10, and Nexus 4 devices and you can also grab the Android 4.2 Binaries for Nexus 10, Nexus 7 Wi-Fi and Galaxy Nexuses.
