Today, a Taiwan-based daily newspaper, DigiTimes reports that shipments of the Google Nexus 7 are going to top 5 million units by the end of the year.

Earlier this month, we heard that soon after Google unveiled its Nexus 10, Nexus 4 along with 3G HSPA+ Nexus 7 and 32GB Nexus 7 editions, Asus announced that sales of Google Nexus 7 reached almost 1 million units per month. They also got a dramatic increase in Q3 tablet shipments, which jumped by nearly 200 percent over the second quarter. But at that time, both Google and Asus didn’t reveal specific sales figures for the device.

As vendors worldwide are placing orders for shipments to peak point in October and November for the big holiday sales beginning late-November, the sales remain high in this period. However, the Nexus 7 shipments are expected to remain high between the range of 700,000 and 1,000,000 units in December also.

The 16GB Nexus 7 is priced at US$199 and a 32GB version at US$249. The pricing of Google Nexus 7 is relatively low hence it brings tough competition to Apple’s iPad. The device is powered by 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3quad-core processor with a 7-inch IPS display covered in “Scratch-resistant Corning glass” with 1280 X 800 pixels of resolution. Last week, Google also released Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update for this device.

Although the shipments of the Google Nexus 7 are going to 5 million units, last week, a Chinese mobile owner claimed that his Google Nexus 7 tablet caught fire with suffocating smoke in his room. Moreover, a report also claimed that during a drop test comparison of Apple’s iPad and Google’s Nexus 7 from around 4.5 feet high, iPad scored better.

We will let you know what the final sales figure will be reached at the end of the year.
