Today, Intel has announced the first smartphone for Africa, Yolo which is packed with Intel Atom chip Z2420 1.2GHz Processor. It was launched two weeks ago at CES 2013. The Yolo smartphone is based on Intel’s Smartphone Reference Design.
The smartphone has a 3.5-inch display with 110.5 x 61 x 12.6mm in dimension and weighs around 132g. Intel Yolo comes with preinstalled Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box with a 512MB RAM. Internal storage of the device is 4GB which can be expanded via a microSD card up to 32GB storage.
The smartphone will be heading to Safaricom carrier and thankfully it will not come with any bloatware. But it will come with pre-installed apps like the Wireless display app (WiDi) which works by rendering a second virtual display broadcast via WI-FI. Wi-Di is enabled by My Wi-Fi, a feature in Intel Centrino Wireless chipsets that connects to a receiver on the TV or PC. Coming to the connectivity, it supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, FM Radio, Micro-USB 2.0, and HSPA+ with Intel’s XMM 6265 modem.
Although there’s no front camera of the device, it has a 5MP camera on the back with touch focus and it comes with two more features: Burst shot which can enable capture of up to 7 simultaneous photos and another feature is Panorama mode.
The device will be sold by Safaricom for 10,999 Kenyan shillings which is around $125. Yet, we have no info when the device will be available in other countries. We’ll keep you updated.
