Samsung Announces 2TB EcoGreen F4EG Desktop Hard Drive

Samsung has announced it’s latest generation Two-Terabyte EcoGreen Hard Drive with the Highest Areal Density for High-performance Desktop Systems. This environmental friendly hard drive is claimed to be giving 19 percent better performance in a standby mode and consumes 23 percent lower power in stand by mode than its previous four-disk type the EcoGreen F3EG.

Samsung F4EG HDD

This 3.5-inch hard drive builds on its predecessor, the F3EG, by providing 2TB of space that is spread over just three platters. Roughly speaking, this translates to each platter housing 667GB of data each (with a platter rotation of 5,400 rpm). The F4EG incorporates a 3.0 gigabits per second SATA interface, a 32 megabyte buffer, and native command queuing. There is also a 1.5 terabyte version of the drive.

In a press release, Samsung Electronics said, “Storage-hungry multimedia professionals, gamers and home PC users continue to increase the amount of video, music, photo, and other personal data they store and back-up. The F4EG delivers all the benefits of a low-power drive yet features top performance quality and is environmentally friendly.”

The power consumption numbers are pretty impressive, the F4EG consumes 6.3W during sequential read/write activity, 5.7W random, 5.1W idle and 1W while in standby. It is Capable of storing up to 880 hours of DVD video or 500,000 songs in MP3 format.
