Apple on Saturday released a new build of its iOS 5 beta firmware to iOS developers, and it is the second version available for over the air software update after the beta 4. The new build iOS 5 Beta 5 is available for all available iOS devices including iPad 2, iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touch devices, and Apple TV. Apple has also introduced an updated iTunes 10.5 Beta 5, and Apple TV iOS beta 4, as well as the Xcode 4.2 Beta 5. The newly released iOS 5 Beta 5 brings bug fixes, stability improvements, and it will be pushed out over-the-air to the all applicable iOS devices. Yes, the iOS 5 Beta 5 can be received as an OTA update on devices that are currently running iOS 5 Beta 4 and have access to a wireless internet connection, whether on WiFi, or 3G. This new version will require you to wipe out the data of your device before being able to update. This new beta bears build number 9A5288d. The final version iOS 5 is slated for release in this fall.

To access the OTA update, devs must access Settings > General > Software Update in iOS 5 beta 4. So, before hitting the update, back up your device on iTunes or iCloud, and erase all data and settings on your device by heading over to Settings –> General –> Reset –> Erase All Content and Settings. Don’t get panic. You might be able to get the update, without erasing all settings though, so it would be worth to give a try before you erase everything.
This 5th beta version of iOS 5 should only be deployed on devices dedicated for iOS 5 beta software development. Here is an official warning from Apple to the users who are not using development devices:
“This version of iOS is intended only for installation on development devices registered with Apple’s Developer Program. Attempting to install this version of iOS in an unauthorized manner could put your device in an unusable state, which could necessitate an out of warranty repair.”
If the reports are accurate, Apple has been terminating accounts of those developers that have been illegally selling iOS 5 UDID activations to non-developers online.
The OTA update weighs in at 128MB. You can also choose to update using the standard method by downloading iOS 5 beta 5 and updating your device via iTunes. The previous pre-release beta of iTunes, iTunes 10.5 beta 4 shall no longer work with iOS 5 beta 5 restored devices, and you will not be able to sync if you don’t install the latest iTunes pre-release beta on your Windows or Mac.
