Operating System

Apple iPad 2 now runs the new iOS 5 operating system, which brings 200+ features including notifications, iMessage, reminders, newsstand, twitter and more. The new Asus Eee Pad Transformer runs the tablet optimized operating system of Android, 3.2 Honeycomb OS and it will be upgraded to the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS soon after its launch.

Display

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer boasts 10.1″ LED backlit Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass display with 1280 X 800 pixels of resolution. The iPad 2 sports the same 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS TFT display as the original iPad, with no upgrade in resolution. Yes, it delivers 768 x 1024 pixels of resolution.

Processor

The most noticeable difference between the Asus Prime and the iPad 2 is processor. Asus Transformer Prime packs a whopping powerful 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor under the hood and this is the first tablet to have such a processor. But, Apple iPad 2 is carrying the A5 1GHz dual-core processor. The Asus Transformer Prime has got a 12-core GeForce GPU and it would run multimedia and applications so faster, with more processing power provided by the four processing cores and also helps the tablet to become better gaming source. Of course, clock speed and number of cores will not define how fast a tablet is or how well it manages power. Anyhow, Nvidia claims that the Tegra 3 processor runs at a clock speed of 1.3GHz and it is five times faster than its predecessor, the dual-core Tegra 2. I can assume that the Transformer Prime won’t endure for longevity with the help of this powerful quad-core processor.

Camera

Every tablets needs front- and rear-facing cameras to keep pace with the competition from the other tablets. Camera part is a big let down for the iPad 2. Apple equipped a front-facing camera for video calling and a second camera on the back. But, the iPad 2 comes with a 0.7-megapixel rear-facing camera to record 720p video, while up front is a VGA shooter, which helps to make FaceTime video calls. Asus Transformer Prime has got an 8 megapixel auto focus camera with flash, f/2.4 lens and 1080p video recording capability and an additional 1.2 megapixel secondary camera.

RAM

You all knew that how much RAM the iPad 2 contains. It is just 512MB RAM. But the Asus Transformer Prime have 1GB of RAM inside, making the tablet super speedy and a platform for multi-tasking.

Storage

Both the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and the Apple iPad 2 have got 32GB & 64GB internal flash storage options. iPad 2 also comes in 16GB flavor. Asus Eee Pad Transformer has also got a microSD card slot for memory expansion support up to 32Gb. Apple iPad 2 is missing this feature to expand the memory.

Speaker

Apple iPad 2 is having a larger, wider grill speaker system, but Transformer Prime have stereo speakers and Asus uses SonicMaster Technology for “crisp and acoustically accurate audio”.

Battery

Asus Transformer Prime has got 25Wh battery, tablet could provide up to 12 hours of battery, while the Apple iPad 2’s 6000mAh battery will lasts up to 10 hours of usage time. Asus transformer Prime’s battery life can be expandable up to 18 with the help of the optional keyboard dock accessory, whcih is also having 22Wh battery. This accessory can also make the tablet into a netbook-style computer. But, iPad 2 isn’t having this advantage as there is no option for the keyboard dock.

Both these tablets have GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity and the usual set of motion and light sensors.

  1. Truth be told the iPad 2 is appealing to me because everyone else is buying it and the wide array of covers and add-ons is astonishing. However, when it comes to spending my own money on a tablet, it would have to be the Prime.
It’s different, it’s unique, the dock puts it ahead of every other tablet by a mile and 3/4s, and I’ll soon be in the market for a highly portable device to replace my NW- Sony Vaio Laptop.
Quad cores, 1GB of Ram, scratch resistant screen, update to ICS….what more can you ask for?

Oh, and the fact that the $499 is 32GB and is expandable to another 32GBs make it a 64GB device for $549-ish.

I will wait a couple of months to see what Asus plans on doing in terms of 4G LTE and wait for the models that come with ICS. By then, there should already be a couple of deals flying around dealnews and other places.
