The largest book retailer in the United States, Barnes and Noble has unveiled two new Android tablets, Nook HD (7 inch) and Nook HD+ (9 inch). Both tablets will launch simultaneously in the US and the UK in November. The pre-orders for these tablets began online and at Barnes and Noble stores. The devices will be available in market in early November.
Barnes and Noble executives showed off just how the hardware stacks up against the competing tablets from Amazon, Google, and Apple earlier this week. “The Nook HD is the lightest, high-resolution 7-inch tablet. It’s 20 percent lighter than the Kindle Fire HD,” Jonathan Shar, Barnes & Noble’s GM of digital content, told ABC News.
The Nook HD has full HD 7 inch display with the resolution of 1440×900, with 243ppi, weigh around 315g. It runs a 1.3GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and a 4000mAh battery. We can choose internal storage options either 8GB or 16GB.
The Nook HD+ features a larger, full HD 9 inch display, resolution of 1920×1280, with 256ppi weigh around 515g. It is powered by a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, a 6000mAh battery, and 1 GB of RAM and you get the chance of choosing 16 GB and 32 GB storage options.
Both tablets come with Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth, plus both can output full HD, 1080p video to a screen of your choice. Both Nook HD and HD+ use Android 4.0 ICS. Barnes and Noble look to upgrade the Nook tables with the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update at the beginning of next year, ensuring the devices stay competitive in the market.
Neither the Nook HD or Nook HD+ have any camera. Barnes & Noble ‘s Vice president of device platform engineering Deepak M. Mulchandani told that a camera isn’t an important addition to a tablet but they might feature a camera in future Nook products.
The Nook HD starts at $199 with 8GB of built-in storage and 16GB for $229. The Nook HD+ has a competitive price tag, with the 16GB version arriving at £229 ($269), and the 32GB going for £269 ($299).
