Several mobile manufacturers including Sony, Lenovo, Huawei, and ZTE are planning to pack their respective upcoming devices with MediaTek’s Quad-core MT6589 chipset under the hood.
The Taiwanese Chip maker, MediaTek is now in partnership with around 20 manufacturers. MediaTek is planning to implement a comprehensive price cut of its handset solution on April 1. Its quad-core MT6589 solution is expected to be reduced by 10% from US$20 to US$18. It is reported that all the mobile manufacturers will roll out the devices based on this chipset by April.
MT6589 is a quad-core Cortex A7 1.2GHz CPU, it is different from other rivals’ quad-core processors such as Qualcomm, Nvidia and more, since it combines an ARM CPU, a PowerVR Series 5XT GPU and a wireless modem chip onboard. The PowerVR GPU included on the chip can support up to 1080p Full HD screens.
All the 2013 Xperia models introduced by Sony are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. But according to this new report, Sony is also looking at MediaTek Soc. Few hours ago, we reported that the upcoming Huawei Ascend G700 would be packed with the low-cost quad-core MediaTek MT6589 SoC. Other major manufacturers like Lenovo and ZTE are also in the pipeline to get this processor.
