Apple, Samsung, Motorola, and other manufacturers have updated almost all of their smartphones to enable 5G support. Google is still behind with its portfolio in India. Google has officially launched Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel 6a handsets in last year in India, and they are yet to get 5G support.
Finally, the search giant has announced today they will be rolling out an OTA update for the aforementioned Pixel phones to enable 5G support on them. The update will be pushed out sometime in the first quarter of this year so that the eligible Pixel phones will work with Airtel and Reliance Jio’s 5G networks. Google was supposed to upgrading process by the end of 2022, but they couldn’t do it due to some unknown reasons
Reliance Jio’s 5G service based on standalone (SA) architecture, while Airtel’s 5G uses non-standalone (NSA) mode that works with most phones. All the existing Airtel and Jio 4G SIMs are 5G enabled, so you don’t need to switch SIMs.
Google also states that the is working closely with Indian carriers to enable the next-generation connectivity and comply with the local regulations and standards. Hopefully, Xiaomi will also come forward to release an update for enabling 5G services on its 5G-capable smartphones in India.
