The Samsung Galaxy Precedent is an Android powered smartphone, packed with mid-range specifications. This handset is also known as “Samsung M828C”.

Just a comment about your ‘note’ above regarding not knowing if it’s cdma or gsm. Any straightalk phone which has a model number ending in ‘c’, in this case Samsung 828c, is a cdma phone, and runs on the verizon network. It’s not much, but maybe it will help someone who wants one and not the other decide on a phone.

Actually that use to be so but in this case the c just stands for cdma phone and this one will be running Sprint service as Verizon would not allow st to power prepaid Android
does this phone use a sim card? if it uses a sim card it WILL run off of ATT towers (not abundant in my area) but with the verizon or sprint they would work greatly in my area. Now I just got off the phone w tech @ st saying anything ending w g will not ping off verizon towers only ATT etc…anyone remember when this came out if it used a sim card? I would love to have this phone only if it will work inside my house, My Nokia E71-2 uses a sim card and i can not use it in my house…Id appreciate any info because I am disabled I need a phone to work inside not just out…..Thanks and good luck everyone!!!
BUYER BEWARE!!!! Some comments here were made by posters who haven’t actually used the phone. THIS IS A SPRINT NETWORK ONLY PHONE!! I’m trying to return mine having no signal or 3g. Look on the bottom lefthand corner of the box – “cdma-s”. The “s” meaning Sprint only.
It actually uses NexTel’s network.
I have had the Samsung Galaxy Precedent since Christmas and it runs on Sprint Towers. Verizon would not carry these because of data usage, although Walmart’s other Straight Talk phones run on the Verizon towers. I do hope they update the Android 2.2 Froyo to 2.3. So far have been unable to do this, and do not really want to root my phone to see if I can do it that way.
Well that’s clear as mud. I’ll most likely be purchasing this phone in the coming weeks. If so, I’ll post my findings on the subject of CDMA v/s GSM after I have hands-on experience. I live in Colorado, and as anyone can plainly see on STs coverage maps, the GSMA-s service map plain sucks for us in the mountain states. May not be an instant deal breaker, but I hope a GSM version exists. Doubtful from what I have read out there in the interweb tubes.
I was told a blue USA map on the box means it uses ATT, red USA uses Verizon.

On the website when I put in my area code it showed this phone as able to work in my area.
Of course there are no sprint towers in my area. I encourage all to BEWARE. It is a huge hassle to return this item. First of all the call center starts with a minimum wait time of 15-20 minutes. If you are disconnected you get to start over.
It has taken me 3 days on the phone, a total of 7 hours spent and I still do not have a working phone.
How do I add my signature to me text messages?

Does it works as hotspot?
It can be used as a hot spot, but if this is done your phone will be permanently disabled without warning…not advisable.
This IS a CDMA phone and will be running on the Sprint network per agreement with Sprint. Will it work on the other CDMA provider’s network (that would be Verizon)? Maybe, maybe not – but who cares? You’re buying a, “de-tuned” obsolete Samsung Galaxy model, not some state-of-the-art dual-core speedster with all the bells and whistles.
Regarding poster above, “this runs on Nextel.” Well, no it doesn’t. Nextel IS a division of Sprint, but runs the old Motorola iDen protocol. Not compatible with standard Sprint CDMA, nor the others’ GSM. Like other CDMA phones, it does NOT use a SIM card.

Would like to address, “Edward”‘s Comment above. Like all phones with the Android 2.2 OS, this phone can be used both for hard-wired (USB port), “tethering” (using phone to provide an internet connection for something like a radio-equipped laptop) or as a, “hotspot” (use phone as a wireless internet connection.) Back in the, “old days,” carriers used to charge extra for one to use these capabilities, however this was at the discretion of the individual carrier. Some MAY still do this, but I’m not aware of ANY CARRIER EVER, “PERMANENTLY DISCONNECTING” ANYONE FOR USING THIS CAPABILITY. They simply de-activate the capability! You’ll need to check with Straight Talk to see if any rules apply when using their, “Unlimited” plans.
MC, please excuse my ignorance, but how do you use the phone to gain internet access on a laptop?

I have had this phone for. A week and I absolutely love it. It does run on sprint, which is not the greatestcwhere I live but the phone is so awesome that I don’t care.it is great. It is the best smartphone deal you can get. Love it!
I’m on it right now and its great but the sprint 3g is horribly slow and has alright coverage where I live but it could be way better. But other than the 3g and coverage the phone is really great but sometimes it freezes but that’s okay. The swype feature is pretty Cool and makes typing a lot faster and easier.
And another thing can and how do I set a text message signature?
regarding coverage, they use sprint’s droid coverage for now (contract will be up for grabs next yr when sprint 1 expires) so the coverage isnt awesome, but it works… also, i bought this phone for my wife & she LOVES it… yes it may not be top of the line, but it does everything we want & then some & it’s really simple to figure out. For a $45/month droid it can’t be beat…. anyone looking for a smart phone should seriously look into this 1. I’ve been using samsung products for years & never dissappointed
Actually, it runs on Sprint’s network, not Verizon and thus far I love the phone and combined service.
I like the phone so far. The screen lock is a bit annoying but you can install Nolock for free. I’m using this Samsung to test different apps and learn cool tricks like free SIP calling via Google Voice/Sipgate). $45/mo for unlimited data is a good deal compared to the greedy “big guys”. However, you get what you pay for – terrible coverage and dropped calls (it’s a phone after all and should be able to receive and place calls). So it’s going back to Walmart in a few days. Many MVNO providers like Straight Talk use this pathetic Sprint network with their droid handsets because it’s cheap for them. Too bad.

Great Phone if sprint has good coverage in your area. I get poor reception in my house but works awesome in the main areas of town. My 1st straight talk phone was the Nokia e71. I wish i did not break it cause it was on at&t and worked great in my home.
Get the admire thru metro, I like the phone a bit better, got it rooted in no time.
the precedent does drop calls. It will not share tower signal with verizon like its sister phone with verizon service. It works well in metro areas. It eats batteries and slowly recharges. does run well on wifi networks better than 3g. I like the features but hate the poor service. Tho the price is right but if you use the phone for business u will be disappointed.
The specs on this phone say it supports up to a 32g microsd card. My question is, does it only support sd or does it support microSDHC format? Because I cannot find a 32g SD card anywhere but plenty of 32g SDHC cards.
Justin, 32GB cards are HC – high capacity. There’s no such thing as a 32GB SD (without the HC) card, even if the card doesn’t say HC on it (some generic cards don’t).
I just purchased this phone also and i was wondering…. exactly how do you set a text message signature? I know its a dumb question but it the only thing i cant figure out
I have had this phone for less than a month and so far I really like it. I’ve used a Nokia E71 for 3 years so there is for sure a learning curve switching to my first “Droid” but so far it has been easy to use and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. Still working on the “hot spot” question but I’ll figure it out. And I’m not sure where these people are that say it’s a Sprint service. I live in Tennessee and it runs on Verizon towers here. Actually the only unlimited service ST has offered on Verizon so far.

Managed to root my phone with ease but anyhoo yeah it runs off sprints network aka nextel its aa great phone for those that want a good android with out the hassel with paying all the money and sgining contracts so hope this was helpful
You all are talking about the networks how about how the phone works….smhOk so have had this phone for almost a year and it is by far the biggest piece of crap i have ever had….i sent it phone to Straighttalk 5x because of malfunctions with the phone. It is slow it freezes and all around isn’t an android i would curse onto anyone…goodluck with the phone you poor people have wasted your money on.
