Are you one of the Motorola Droid R2-D2 handsets’ users on Verizon, who have been patiently waiting for the most-awaited Gingerbread update? If so, we’ve got some great news that could make you feel happy. It seems Verizon has started rolling out the Gingerbread update for the Droid R2-D2 handsets, but there is a “Coming Soon” tag on the support page of the R2-D2 software update information on Verizon website. The latest update is bearing the build number 4.05.602.A957.Verizon.en.US and it weighs in at 137 MB. Along with the Android 2.3 Gingerbread flavor, this update will also bring a new Download Manager to manage your downloads, e-mail attachments and apps, a new "Manage Applications" tab to see a running list of open applications and the storage and memory used by each one. The new multi-touch shortcuts will let you punch in numbers and symbols without having to change to the numeric keyboard mode. There will also be improved word selection and copy functionality. The update will come over-the-air (OTA), that means you’ll receive a notification on your phone that the update is available. Then you’ll be able to choose to download and install it. The rollout may take a few weeks for it to reach your particular device. Don’t forget to take a full backup of the device, before you proceed to download the update.
If the update hasn’t yet hit your handsets, then you’ll be able to get it manually. You can check for the OTA update by going into your Menu –> Settings –> About Phone –> System Updates –> Download –> tap Install Now button. Installation should start now –> Handset Reboots Automatically –> Tap the OK button on screen –> Done. The Gingerbread flavor should be ready now to taste on your handset. After finishing the installation of the update, the software version should be shown as 4.05.603.A957.Verizon.en.US. The entire update process should take about 10-15 minutes. The size for the software upgrade from the older version to latest version 4.5.602 is 137 MB.
