Google Nexus S Gets Android 2.3.6 Update GRK39F

A couple of days ago, we reported about the Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update for HTC-made Nexus One handset. In early September, Google has started pushing out the Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update GRK39C for the Samsung-made Google Nexus S handset, but it was pulled later due to some Wi-Fi and USB Tethering related issues. Today we have some good news for the Nexus S owners. Google has once again started pushing out the refreshed Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread update for Nexus S handsets. The latest firmware update for Nexus S is carrying the build number GRK39F. The new update is weighing 17.5MB of size, containing the important bug fixes, as well as a set of the security patches.

Google Nexus S owners will be seeing an OTA update notification on their handsets at any time. If you want to check for the update manually, you should move to Home –> Settings –> About Phone –> System Updates and then tap on “Update Firmware” or “Update Android” and the updates will be automatically downloaded to your phone.

You can also dial *#*#checkin#*#* (or) *#*#2432546#*#* on your Nexus S handset to check for update, you will then see a yellow exclamation icon in the notification (or different icon) bar to alert you the update is available for your handset.

How To Manually Upgrade Nexus S to Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread:

# Download the update from Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread GRK39F Update File (hit the link). (Nexus S owners should be running with software version GRJ22).
# Rename the file to “update.zip”. Bear in min that if you’re using Windows, you should rename it to “update” (without any quotes).
# Move the update.zip file onto your microSD card.
# Reboot Nexus S and when it starts booting back up, hold down the trackball and press the power button.
# Select “Recovery” option.
# When you get an exclamation point with triangle, squeeze the Power and Volume Up buttons a few times until you see the recovery screen shows up.
# Go to Menu –> select “Apply sdcard:update.zip” and let things run their course.
# Reboot now and the phone should be upgraded to Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread.

If your handset isn’t running the GRJ22 software version, you can download the Stock GRJ22 Build (hit the link) –> Copy it to “Root” folder of your USB storage  –> Flash it from Clockwork Recovery or stock recovery –> Clean the entire data and reboot the handset –> Download the GRK39F Build File (hit the link) –> then flash it with stock recovery.

Note that the rooted users may not successfully upgrade their handsets using the above procedure.
