These days, we’ve been seeing many updates rolling out for the Android handsets carrying the Gingerbread build. Most of the Verizon branded handsets have already upgraded Gingerbread version successfully. Another handsets is getting taste of Gingerbread, this time on the Sprint branded Samsung Epic 4G. The carrier has started pushing out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OTA (Over-The-Air) update for the Samsung Epic 4G handset. In early February, this handset has been upgraded to Android 2.2 Froyo OS. It took 9 months for Sprint to roll out Gingerbread love for this handset. Along with the Gingerbread version, the new firmware update is carrying the following features and improvements.
# Audible Sprint AIRAVE notifications when answering call.
# SMS messages sent without area code.
# Update for PRL and Profile.
# Bluetooth headset sound improvements.
# Fully visible date on device lock screen.
# Easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email or another application.
# Fix for the device ability to stream media through certain applications for the device.
# Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync HTML tagging.

Users of the Sprint branded Samsung Epic 4G handset will be getting the notification alerts on their screen panels regarding the Gingerbread update. In order to manually download the Gingerbread goodness right now, all the Samsung Epic 4G handsets’ owners need to do is hit up Home –> Menu, then Settings, select About Phone, hit Software Updates and then select Check now. The update should be waiting for you at this stage and follow the on-screen instructions to finish the update process successfully. After upgrading to Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS, the handset’s software version number should be shown as EI22 (s:D700.0.5S.EI22).
