You may already know that South Korea’s Samsung is a core Apple supplier, producing both dynamic RAM and NAND memory chips for the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Last week, we heard that Samsung raised the prices of the mobile processors supplied to Apple Inc by 20 percent. It seems Samsung Electronics has a long-term contract to supply Application Processors to Apple until 2014.
Now, a Chinese Business news reports that Apple seems to be changing its battery suppliers for the iPad and MacBook, and may have shifted battery orders to Chinese manufacturers— Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) and Titanjin Lishen Battery after Samsung stopped supplying its battery to Apple.
Few months ago, it was reported that Apple had reduced memory chip orders from Samsung and went to Toshiba, Elpida and Hynix to fill the gap, who would provide both DRAM and NAND chips. More sources also claimed that the leading manufacturer of DRAM, Elpida already sells as much as half of its memory output to Apple. Again, ifixit’s teardown found that instead of using Samsung RAM on Apple iPhone 5, the handset packed a RAM manufactured by Elpida.
Hence fighting a global patent battle won’t give any better results, losses for both and the consumers.
