MediaTek already became the number one chipset supplier for Android phones sold during Q4 2021 period in the US. Today, the Taiwanese based chipset maker announced its refreshed mid-tier chipset, called the Dimensity 1080. It is the successor to the Dimensity 920 SoC, which debuted last year.
The Deimensity 1080 octa-core chip is based on 6nm process and it features two ARM Cortex-A78 CPU cores ticking at up to 2.6GHz (up from 2.5GHz) and six ARM-Cortex A55 cores working at up to 2GHz. This chipset is specifically made for mid range 5G smartphones and it is coupled with Mali-G68 MC4 GPU. The Dimensity 1080 comes with improved performance, better efficiency, and beefed-up camera capabilities compared to its predecessor.
The new Dimensity 1080 is capable of handling image data from sensors up to 200MP (before it was 108MP) with the Imagiq ISP. There’s hardware-accelerated for HDR video at up to 4K resolution and it it carries supports for quad-camera computing. It has the same HyperEngine 3.0 just like the 920, while it still supports sub-6GHz 5G networks, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, dual 5G with dual standby, and it has the same AI Processing Unit (APU).
