There have been recent reports suggesting that Apple has canceled its 27-inch mini-LED external display, which had been rumored to be the second-generation Apple Studio Display or a higher-end model between it and the Pro Display XDR. However, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has come forward to refute these claims, saying that the product is still in the works and expected to enter mass production in the coming years.
Kuo’s statement contradicts previous reports by Ross Young that the project had been scrapped altogether, offering a ray of hope to those eagerly anticipating the release of Apple’s mini-LED display. While it may not arrive as soon as some had hoped, the fact that it is still in development is exciting news for Apple fans and tech enthusiasts alike.
The mini-LED display is expected to feature a number of enhancements over traditional LED displays, including better contrast ratios, improved brightness levels, and more precise color control. While it remains to be seen what other features Apple will pack into this product, the potential for a high-quality display that integrates seamlessly with Apple’s ecosystem is undoubtedly enticing.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the mini-LED 27-inch external display is still in the works and will include high-end features such as 120Hz ProMotion support. Kuo also mentions that the display will use a new glass material backplane, which is a departure from Apple’s current lineup of products with screens. This new backplane will make the panel thinner and the overall display bezels slimmer, resulting in a more streamlined design. While there have been conflicting reports about the display’s release date, Kuo believes that it will enter mass production in late 2024 or early 2025.
Update on the rumored new 27" Apple display predictions:
— 郭明錤 (Ming-Chi Kuo) (@mingchikuo) April 11, 2023
1. It's slated for mass production in 2024 or early 2025, boasting all the features one would expect from a high-end monitor.
2. Utilizing mini-LED technology, and the most notable design change is to switch the material…
It’s worth noting that if Kuo’s estimate is correct and the mini-LED 27-inch external display enters mass production in late 2024 or early 2025, it would mean that the display would not be updated for about three years, assuming it launches at that time. However, this is not unusual for Apple’s external display roadmap, which tends to have long gaps between updates. The Apple Studio Display, for example, was just launched in 2022 alongside the Mac Studio.
The Pro Display XDR, which was launched in 2019, is due for a refresh. In the past, there were rumors that a new Pro Display XDR would launch alongside the new Mac Pro. It is also rumored that that Apple is working on a display with 7K resolution, which could be the successor to the Pro Display XDR. However, it’s unclear when this display will be released. The ongoing Studio Display is available at a starting price of $1,599 and offers a 5K resolution with no ProMotion support.
Ross Young has a proven track record of providing accurate information on display-related features for upcoming Apple products. He correctly predicted the inclusion of ProMotion technology in the iPhone 13 Pro and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, as well as the sixth-generation iPad mini’s upgraded 8.3-inch display size, among other details.
Overall, the mini-LED 27-inch external display looks to be a promising addition to Apple’s product lineup, and it will be interesting to see how it stacks up against other monitors in the market when it finally arrives.
