Google has revealed plans to integrate generative AI technology into several of its products, including a new “Magic Editor” for Google Photos set to debut later this year. During the kickoff for I/O 2023, CEO Sundar Pichai unveiled the feature, which looks quite impressive based on the limited examples that have been shared so far.
With Magic Editor in Google Photos, moving a subject such as a person is simple. Users can select the object by holding it down, drag it to a new location, and dropping it there. The AI-powered editor will recognize the entire object and create new content to fill in the gaps after repositioning it.
Google’s upcoming Magic Editor in Google Photos will offer users an experimental editing experience that enables them to make complex edits without pro-level editing skills to specific parts of an image, such as the subject, sky, or background.
According to CEO Sundar Pichai, the Magic Editor will allow users to make complex edits to specific parts of an image, even without professional editing skills. The Magic Editor builds on features such as Magic Eraser and Photo Unblur and will let users:
- Reposition the subject of a shot to the best spot
- Relocate and change the scale of the subject
- Brighten up the sky and make it less cloudy to match the memory of the day
- Remove unwanted elements from the photo, such as bag straps that were forgotten to be removed
Using AI techniques, the Magic Editor can reposition the subject, relocate and change the scale of the subject, make the sky brighter, and remove unwanted objects, such as a bag strap. The editing tool is set to launch first in early access to select Pixel phones later this year, and Google will be seeking feedback from users. The goal is to give users even more control over the final look and feel of their photos.
