Display analyst Ross Young, who has a history of accurate predictions, has claimed that the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro lineup will feature the biggest screens ever seen on an iPhone. Additionally, reports suggest that the new models will adopt under-screen Face ID technology, resulting in the removal of the notch.
Apple’s iPhone X introduced a new design language with its almost bezel-less display and the removal of the home button. This marked the shift towards taller aspect ratios, with 19.5:9 becoming the norm. The iPhone 14 series continues to feature the same aspect ratio, and so will the upcoming iPhone 15. However, it is possible that the iPhone 16 Pro models may introduce a new aspect ratio altogether.
Renowned display analyst, Ross Young from Display Supply Chain Consultants, has reported that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models, scheduled to be launched in 2024, will feature the largest screens in iPhone history. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to feature a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is likely to come with a 6.9-inch display. This marks a significant increase in screen size when compared to the current iPhone 14 series, which still use a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.
To clarify, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models are expected to have slightly larger display sizes compared to their predecessors. Specifically, the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays of the current iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be replaced by around 6.2X-inch and 6.8X-inch displays in the upcoming models. It is important to note that this information only applies to the Pro models, and not to the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
The standard models are expected to receive upgrades such as a Dynamic Island this year and a 120Hz refresh rate in 2025, and may also feature a new aspect ratio at some point. Apple typically reserves certain features for its Pro models to create a distinction and justify the higher price point. Increasing the screen size for the Pro models would be one such feature that sets them apart from the base models.
Ross Young’s statement suggests that the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models will have slightly larger displays than their predecessors, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The 6.4-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes would be the largest ever for an iPhone, continuing the trend of larger screen sizes over the years. In comparison, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max feature 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively, and it is expected that the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models will maintain the same screen sizes.
It is worth noting that these are still just rumors and nothing has been confirmed by Apple at this point. However, Ross Young has a good track record when it comes to predicting display sizes for upcoming Apple products. In the past, he correctly predicted the introduction of ProMotion on the iPhone 13 Pro and the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, as well as the sixth-generation iPad mini’s larger 8.3-inch display, among other details.
According to Young’s predictions, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will feature a new design that moves the Face ID system under the display and keeps only a small punch hole for the selfie camera, updating the current Dynamic Island design. This will free up some space vertically, but may make it more challenging to access the Island.
We will have to wait and see if his predictions for the iPhone 16 lineup turn out to be accurate.
