Gaming smartphones have gained a devoted following in recent years, but they still represent a small segment of the overall smartphone market. Unfortunately for fans of the Lenovo Legion series, it has come to light that Lenovo has chosen to end production of its Legion gaming phone series.
The last device in the series, the Legion Y70, was announced in August of last year, and there has been no news of a new model since. This week, Lenovo confirmed that it is no longer in the business of making gaming smartphones, leaving many gamers disappointed.
Lenovo has officially announced that it will no longer be producing Legion gaming smartphones, as part of a wider business transformation and consolidation of its gaming portfolio. The move comes after rumors circulated on social media, prompting the company to confirm the news to Android Authority.
According to a Lenovo spokesperson, the company remains committed to advancing the gaming category across various form factors, while focusing on areas where it can deliver the greatest value to the global gaming community. Despite discontinuing its Legion gaming smartphones, Lenovo continues to be a leader in gaming devices and solutions.
Despite the discontinuation of the Lenovo Legion gaming phones, the gaming smartphone market continues to thrive with the likes of the Asus ROG Phone lineup, Nubia Red Magic series, and Xiaomi’s Black Shark phones as the three primary players. Lenovo’s Legion phones were known for their innovative designs, such as the side pop-up selfie cameras, dual charge ports, and dedicated cooling fans, which made them stand out in a crowded market. However, with the rise of mobile gaming and the increasing demand for powerful gaming devices, it will be interesting to see how the remaining players continue to evolve and innovate in the future.
The fate of existing Lenovo Legion devices is unknown, as it remains unclear whether the company will continue providing support. While the decision to discontinue its Legion gaming smartphone business may come as a surprise to some, it seems to have been a logical move on Lenovo’s part.
Despite offering a range of appealing features for gamers, such as a 144Hz display, haptic motors and RGB lighting effects, the company has only released two gaming-focused Legion devices since introducing them in 2020, with no rumors or leaks regarding a 2023 follow-up.
