The world’s biggest memory chip maker, Samsung, has officially announced the new 8.5 Gbps LPDDR5X DRAM today. Samsung claims it is the fastest LPDDR5X DRAM chip in the industry at present. There is a good chance that Samsung could use these memory chips could be used with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor inside next year’s high-end flagship smartphones and tablets.
LPDDR5 DRAM, the Low Power Double Data Rate 5X DRAM is designed for smartphones, PCs, datacenters, and automobiles bringing suitable environment for applications with low-power consumption and high-performance. That means this memory technology is specifically targeted towards the metaverse and mobile AI applications, and also 5G.
Samsung also claims the new memory achieved 8.5 Gbps speeds, and surpassed the milestone within a matter of months by beating the previous maximum speed of 7.5 Gbps that was achieved back in March. This new memory chip is fabricated using the 14 nm process and should allow higher speeds to be achieved with minimal internal redesign. It also offers a very good trade between speed, size, and cost.
Daniel Lee, Executive VP of the Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics, said, “As LPDDR memory continues to broaden its usage beyond smartphones into AI and data center applications, strong collaboration between memory and SoC vendors is becoming all the more important. Samsung will continue to actively engage with innovators like Qualcomm Technologies to enhance ecosystem readiness for future LPDDR standards.”
