Xiaomi’s sub-brand, Redmi, recently launched several new smartphones including the Redmi Note 12 series, including the standard Redmi Note 12, Redmi Note 12 5G, Redmi Note 12 Pro, and Redmi Note 12 Pro+. However, the brand also quietly added two new lower-end smartphones, the Redmi A2 and Redmi A2+, to its global website without any fanfare. These smartphones have modest specifications and are aimed at budget-conscious consumers.
It’s unclear why the launch of the new devices was not accompanied by any fanfare, but the two new handsets are now listed on the website.
The Redmi A2 is a buidget-friendly low-end smartphone recently launched by Xiaomi’s sub-brand, Redmi. It features a 6.52-inch 720×1600 touchscreen, which is not the highest resolution, but still offers a decent display size. The phone is powered by the MediaTek Helio G36 SoC with 2 or 3GB of RAM, which is not the most powerful chipset available, but is adequate for basic usage.
The phone comes with 32GB of expandable storage, allowing users to store their photos, videos, and other files. It also has an 8 MP rear camera with a QVGA auxiliary lens, which is not the most impressive camera setup, but can still take decent photos. The 5 MP selfie camera is also not the best, but should be enough for casual use.
The Redmi A2 has a 5,000 mAh battery with 10W charging support, which should provide decent battery life for a low-end device. It runs on Android 12 (Go Edition), which is a lightweight version of Android designed for low-end devices, making it run smoothly even with its lower specs.
One downside is that the phone does not support 5G, which may be a deal-breaker for users looking for faster internet speeds. However, it does come with a 3.5mm headphone jack, which is becoming a rare feature in newer smartphones. Charging is done through microUSB, which may be less convenient than USB-C, but is still a common charging method.
Xiaomi has launched the Redmi A2+ alongside the Redmi A2. The Redmi A2+ is almost identical to the Redmi A2, except for the inclusion of a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Both devices share the same specifications, which include a 6.52-inch 720×1600 touchscreen, MediaTek Helio G36 SoC, 2 or 3GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, 8MP rear camera with a QVGA auxiliary lens, 5MP selfie camera, and a 5,000mAh battery with 10W charging support.
Both devices come in light blue, light green, and black color options and are expected to be sold at a very affordable price point. Overall, the Redmi A2 is a budget-friendly smartphone with basic features that are suitable for casual users who do not require high-end specs.
