Apple has silently announced updated versions of the iPad Pro via a dedicated press release on Apple Newsroom. As expected earlier, these new models are powered by the new Apple M2 processor, also support a hover feature on the Apple Pencil, faster connectivity, updated camera features, and running on the new iPadOS 16. This year’s iPad Pro is the first to ship with Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.
As usual, the new Apple iPad Pro comes in two sizes: 11-inches and 12.9 inches. Just like the previous generation models, the base model sports an 11-inch 120Hz Liquid Retina IPS LCD with 2388x1688px resolution, while the 12.9-inch version comes with a Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED LCD display with XDR brightness blasting up to 1600 nits. Both the models are powered by the Apple’s very own and latest M2 chip along with 10-core Apple GPU.
The new M2 chip has an 8-core CPU (4x performance cores + 4x efficiency cores), a memory bandwidth of 100MB/s, along with a 16-core Neural Engine for machine learning and AI workloads. Apple promises the new M2 processor has 35% faster graphics performance, 40% better machine learning performance, and 50% greater memory bandwidth compared to the previous iPad Pro model.
The new iPad Pro features improved wireless connectivity in the form of Wi-Fi 6E(802.11ax) with 2×2 MIMO, simultaneous dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz). Wi-Fi 6E helps the new iPad Pro models to achieve downloads up to 2.4Gbps, 2x faster than the previous models. Apple has taken away some cellular support for the new iPad Pro models.
M2 iPad Pro features new Hover Mode for Apple Pencil. This is a 2nd gen Apple Pencil hover experience, which can detect electromagnetic signals transmitted by the tip of the pencil up to 12 mm above the display, so that the users to see a preview of their mark before they make it.
For photography and FaceTime video calls, Apple has used the same camera hardware as the previous generation iPad Pro introduced in April 2021. Both the new iPad Pro models are having a 12MP Wide camera with a ƒ/1.8 aperture and a 10MP Ultra Wide camera with a ƒ/2.4 aperture on the back side. But the new M2 has enabled improved camera features on the iPad Pro, letting the users to record ProRes videos at up to 4k at 60fps. The still camera functionality upgrades from Smart HDR 3 to Smart HDR 4. On the front side, there is a 12MP Ultra Wide TrueDepth front camera with 122° field of view, f/2.4 aperture.
Remaining specs are including FaceTime video/audio, four speakers, five studio-quality microphones, 28.65Wh battery(for 11″ model), 40.88Wh battery (for 12.9″ model) Bluetooth 5.3 support and 5G connectivity on the LTE models.
