Apple Pushes Out Firmware Update for AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max

Firmware Update for AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max

Apple has commenced the deployment of a firmware update for the second and third-generation AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max, hot on the heels of the recent public release of iOS 16.4.1. This firmware update comes on the heels of previous updates for the AirPods family that were released back in January.

The latest firmware version for the second and third-generation AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max is 5E133, which is now available for all of these models. This update supersedes the previous version 5B59. Typically, firmware updates for Apple’s wireless earbuds only bring minor enhancements.

Although Apple doesn’t provide immediate release notes for its updated firmware for AirPods, the company maintains a support document containing release information for the device. This document is accessible to users seeking more information on what’s included in the refreshed firmware updates.

Upgrading the AirPods software doesn’t follow a standard procedure, but the firmware is usually installed over-the-air while the AirPods are connected to an iOS device. To force an update, simply place the AirPods in their case, connect the case to a power source, and pair the AirPods to an iPhone or an iPad. After a short period of time, the update should automatically start.

Here are the steps to check the firmware version of your AirPods:

  • Connect your AirPods to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap AirPods.
  • Look at the number next to “Firmware Version.”
