Last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 is an incredible piece of technology, and it has indeed helped the manufacturer to not feel afraid of foldable phones anymore. But, a few days ago, Oppo has come up with the first ever flip phone, the Find N2 Flip, undercutting the Galaxy Z Flip 4, with better specifications, and a 100 cheaper price tag. Oppo’d first Flip phone has a much bigger cover display, measuring 3.26 inches, than the Galaxy Z Flip 4 (1.9 inches), to get more tasks done without unfolding the device.

Samsung seems to have taken notice regarding the cover display. If the latest rumor turns out to be true, the Korean tech giant’s upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be having a surprising outer display upgrade.

That seems to be the thinking over at Samsung Display HQ as the reliable tipster Ice Universe reports that the company is planning to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 5 smartphone with an upgrade in an outer display. He claims that the Z Flip 5’s outer display is set to be larger than the cover display on the recently launched Oppo Find N2 Flip. The tipster hasn’t described the exact screen size of the outer display for the Z Flip 5. To recall, Find N2 Flip has a bigger 3.26-inch cover display and the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 1.9-inch cover display.

It would be interesting to see how the manufacturer will adopt more functionality and more things to the outer display to make it more useful. Despite having a larger outer panel on Oppo’s Flip phone, the manufacturer opted to narrow it down to just a handful of widgets and limited functionality, making it much less useful than the much smaller display on the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

With the Galaxy Z Flip 4’s cover display, you can adjust quick settings, check the time and weather, capture images, check notifications, reply to messages, and use certain widgets, and pay for things. But it won’t let you run the apps on its small 1.9-inch outer display.

We are looking forward to seeing if Samsung lets you use almost all apps on the external display of the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5. That would make the phone more usable without opening, improving its battery life and hinge longevity. In fact, the customized One UI software would be also great and helpful with the larger display on the Flip 5.

Similar to the recently launched Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is rumored to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform for Galaxy. This custom chipset for Galaxy has a processing speed of up to 3.36 GHz, in comparison to the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SOC, which locks at up to 3.2GHz. There is a possibility that the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 may feature the same custom version of the SD8G2.

As per the previous leaks, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will have an updated hinge design, which could make the foldable display crease less noticeable. That means Samsung is attempting to reduce the display crease on the upcoming Flip handset.
