Rumor has it: iPhone 15 and 15 Plus to Sport Frosted Glass Backs

According to a reputable source, there are two fresh rumors circulating about the upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. The first is that Apple is intending to introduce a new color option for these models in the current year. The second rumor is about a new design for the back panel of the devices, which will feature a “frosted glass” texture. This design has been previously utilized on the “Pro” model iPhones.

This rumor originates from a Weibo account that has a proven track record of accurately leaking information about upcoming Apple products, including the recent revelation that the iPhone 14 models would be available in a Yellow color option.

At present, the back glass design of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus is glossy, while the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max sport a frosted matte finish. The design of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus allows for the rear glass panel to be removed, which is a first for an iPhone since the iPhone 4S. This design feature makes internal repairs more accessible and streamlined. It’s doubtful that switching to a frosted glass design for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus would alter this aspect of the design.

Additionally, according to the same source, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are rumored to be available in a new cyan-green hue. The color is said to be reminiscent of the green option that Apple previously offered for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. As we’ve previously covered, there have been rumors circulating that the iPhone 15 Pro will come in a new “deep red” color, while the iPhone 15 will reportedly be available in blue.

Over the years, Apple has been known to introduce features and design elements in its Pro models that later make their way to the lower-end iPhone models. For instance, OLED displays were exclusively available on Pro models until the iPhone 12 lineup, while the Dynamic Island feature is expected to be expanded to the entire iPhone 15 lineup this year.

If Apple decides to use the frosted glass process for the back panel of the iPhone 15, it is likely that similar design changes could be seen in the Pro models, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. As these phones are expected to have matte titanium edges, Apple could opt for a glossy finish on the back glass to complement the matte edges. However, this is just speculation and nothing has been confirmed by Apple yet.

Although the source that leaked the rumor has been correct in the past about the launch of the Yellow iPhone 14, their long-term reliability is not established, and there is no assurance that their latest information will be accurate. Nonetheless, given their past accuracy, this rumor is worth considering.
