According to recent reports, the upcoming iPhone 15 is expected to abandon the traditional Lightning connector and adopt the USB-C interface instead. While USB-C has gained widespread acceptance in the industry, Apple intends to restrict its usage somewhat on the iPhone 15.
Notably, renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo revealed on Monday that the USB-C port on the new iPhone will allow for faster charging speeds. But there’s a catch. To enjoy this benefit, users will have to ensure that they are using certified cables with their devices.
Kuo’s recent report indicates that Apple plans to optimize fast charging performance with USB-C for the iPhone 15 models. Presently, the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro models support a maximum charging speed of 20W and 27W, respectively. With the upcoming USB-C port, iPhone 15 users will be able to recharge their devices more quickly. However, this will require the use of an appropriate charger.
As Apple no longer includes a power adapter in the iPhone box, users will need to purchase a new one separately if they don’t already have a compatible charger at home. The most affordable option is Apple’s 20W USB-C adapter, which costs $19. However, Apple also offers a 30W adapter for $39.
But there’s a catch, as we mentioned above. According to Kuo, faster charging speeds will only be achievable with Apple-certified USB-C cables. Even if users have a compatible plug adapter, the iPhone may not receive full power without the right cable.
In the past months, there have been reports from sources such as ShrimpApplePro who claimed that Apple will offer MFi (Made for iPhone) certification for USB-C accessories. This certification is important because it guarantees that the accessory meets Apple’s standards for quality and performance.
According to ShrimpApplePro, cables without MFi certification will have limited charging speeds on the iPhone 15. In other words, users won’t be able to take full advantage of the faster charging speeds offered by USB-C if they don’t use an Apple-certified cable.
Another recent analysis by Kuo indicates that although all models in the iPhone 15 lineup will have a USB-C port, only the Pro models will support faster data transfer speeds with USB 3.2. On the other hand, the standard iPhone 15 models will be limited to the slower USB 2.0. This is comparable to the iPad 10, which has a USB-C port but can only achieve 2.0 speeds.

Kuo also revealed that Apple is anticipating a surge in demand for its 20W USB-C power adapter with the release of the iPhone 15, and plans to increase its shipments by up to 120%. This is because many users who are still using old chargers will need to purchase a new one with a USB-C port in order to take advantage of the new fast charging capabilities of the iPhone 15.
Furthermore, it has been reported that the new iPhone 15 models will also feature a revamped design, with slightly curved edges, thinnest bezels, and a larger camera bump. Despite the retention of the same four sizes as the current iPhone 14 lineup, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are rumored to be getting rid of the notch altogether. Instead, they will adopt the new Dynamic Island technology for a more immersive and seamless screen experience.
