Verizon is now rolling out the new update to the Droid RAZR along with its slightly fatter brother, the Droid RAZR MAXX. The new firmware update will crank the version number up to 6.12.173.XT912.Verizon.en.US. According to the changelog of the update 6.12.173, there will be some massive changes coming to the system and we should also mention that the new update will bring Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread build to the Motorola Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX handsets. The new OTA update is now ready and can be pulled to your Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX handsets by heading over to Menu –> Settings –> About Phone –> System Updates –> If you see the update is available –> Tap Download button –> Hit Install Now button –> Device reboots automatically –> Follow the instructions till the upgraded process of 151.8MB update finishes successfully –> Device reboots again –> Done.

How To Manually Download Android 2.3.6/ 6.12.173 Update on Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX Handsets

If you want to wait the till OTA notification alerts you about the new firmware upgrade, you can manually upgrade your Motorola Droid RAZR/RAZR MAXX handset by downloading the Blur_Version.6.11.748.XT912.Verizon.en.US.zip file and flashing on your device. Don’t be confused here. 6.11.748 version is referring to the current version you are running now. But, it will jump up to 6.12.173 version, which is newer than the 6.11.748 you are currently running.

# Download the required file from the above link and copy it to microSD card of your handset.
# Turn off your handset.
# Keep holding both Volume Up and Down and Power at the same time to reboot into recovery mode.
# Choose “Recovery” when menu appears.
# Press both volumes at the same time when you see an Android logo with exclamation mark.
# Select “apply update from sdcard.”

*Scroll with Volume Down, select “apply update from sdcard” with Power switch

# Select the downloaded file “Blur_Version.6.11.748.XT912.Verizon.en.US.zip” from SD card to flash.
# Let it to do its task.
# When it prompts, hit Reboot System Now button.
# That’s it.

  1. I just updated to 6.12.173 yesterday and I have to say my connectivity seems even WORSE. The entire cellular connection drops at random and it’s very frustrating. Ugh!
