Pixel 7 series may have Face Unlock and Dual eSIM profiles

Google’s Pixel 7 series is highly anticipated. Google will launch both the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro on October 6. We already know everything about Pixel 7 series – their specifications/features, press renders, color availability, Indian markets availability, pricing details in the US and Europe territories. Today we have some interesting news about the next iteration of Pixel phones. Android expert, Mishall Rahman has pulled some interesting information about Pixel 7 series. Google has listed the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro on Google Play Console – revealing both phones come with a support for “android.hardware.biometrics.face,” That means Pixel 7 series has some form of biometric face unlock under the hood. The Pixel 7 is supposed to use the front-facing camera’s image sensor to create the depth maps required for a secure facial recognition system.

Pixel loyal fans were hugely disappointed with the lack of face unlock capability on the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro when they released last year. You might have heard that Pixel Team is still working with developers to bring the facial recognition feature to Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Google is expected to distribute this feature via a software update in the coming months.

Google has been developing a version of face unlock that also uses the under-display fingerprint sensor. A combination of facial recognition with fingerprint sensor information would allow Pixel 6 series to support facial recognition. Recently launched Android 13 QPR 1 beta build’s APK Insight files have referred to face unlocking in its software. We speculate that Google could be testing this face unlock functionality on the Pixel 6 series only to introduce it on Pixel 7 series. We also believe that Google still have plans to implement the long-awaited face unlock feature via an upcoming feature drop for the Pixel 6 Pro once the Pixel 7 phones have been released.

Pixel 4 and 4XL were the last Pixel phones that had proper secure face unlocking functionality in 2019. Even before the launch of the Pixel 6 series, there were also rumours that that series would support Face Unlock functionality, but it never happened. We will have to wait and see what Google is going to do with next Pixel flagships.

Another exciting news is that Pixel 7 duo phones are rumored to be having dual eSIM MEP functionality right out of the box. Current generation smartphones have old eSIM functionality which allows you to operate your phone on one physical SIM card and one eSIM profile. With this new eSIM MEP support, users can have two activated eSIM profiles on their new Pixels. MEP (Multiple Enable Profiles) is a new feature introduced in Android 13 that lets you to connect to two eSIM profiles simultaneously. We don’t have any concrete information about whether Pixel 7 series will release without a SIM card tray or not.
