Google’s upcoming release, the Pixel 7a, is highly anticipated as the company’s newest addition to their smartphone lineup. With the phone’s launch date looming, leaks and rumors about the mid-range device have been gaining momentum.
According to the latest leak, it appears that the upcoming Google Pixel 7a will be the company’s first budget-friendly smartphone to feature Face Unlock technology.
Face Unlock was first introduced on the Pixel 4 series by Google, but it was absent in the following year’s lineup. Despite the indications that Google had planned to include Face Unlock in the Pixel 6 series, the convenient feature only made its return with the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. It is now rumored that the Pixel 7a will be the first pocket-friendly device from Google to feature Face Unlock.
Until now, Google’s affordable A-Series Pixel phones have relied solely on fingerprint sensors as the primary method for unlocking, with Pattern/PIN unlock options also available. However, according to the latest leak, it appears that Google will finally introduce Face Unlock to its budget lineup with the upcoming Pixel 7a. Last year’s Pixel 6a featured an under-display fingerprint sensor, which was an upgrade from the previous Pixel 5a.
The recently leaked images of the Pixel 7a suggest that it may feature both an under-display fingerprint sensor and Face Unlock capabilities. SnoopyTech, a reputable leaker, shared some blurry images of the phone’s menus which included settings for “Face & Fingerprint Unlock.” This marks a departure from Google’s previous A-Series Pixel phones, which only had fingerprint sensors as a supplementary security feature.
The alleged leaked images of the Pixel 7a show that it may be the most affordable Pixel phone to feature Face Unlock. However, there is a possibility that Google may remove this feature before the official launch, as it has happened before with the Pixel 6 series.
The Face Unlock feature on the upcoming Google Pixel 7a is expected to function in a similar manner to that of the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. These devices utilize dual-pixel technology in their front-facing cameras to ensure that the face being scanned is three-dimensional and not a flat two-dimensional image. This added layer of security helps prevent unauthorized access to the device.
In contrast to traditional 2D facial recognition, which can be spoofed using a photograph or video, 3D facial recognition technology is much more sophisticated.
