Sony Xperia 1 V to feature custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for image processing

Sony Mobile is gearing up to release its new flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 V. Although official details about the device have been scarce, leaked information suggests that it may not be a significant upgrade in terms of design and specifications compared to its predecessor.

However, there have been rumors that the Xperia 1 V will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which has gained popularity for its improved performance and lower heat generation compared to the earlier Gen1 version. While some speculate that this upgrade alone would be sufficient, there are others who believe that the Xperia 1 V may offer something unique.

Reports suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 chip installed in the Xperia 1 V will have the same clock speed as the regular version, but it will have customized image processing capabilities that are tailored to Sony’s specifications. The source of this information is a Weibo post, so the accuracy and reliability of this claim remain unknown.

To recall, the recently released Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 features an overclocked version of the chip called “For Galaxy”. However, it appears that the Xperia 1 V’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will not differ significantly from the regular version in terms of clock speed. This implies that the image processing capabilities may be the key factor that sets it apart.

It’s worth noting that Sony and Qualcomm established a joint lab for developing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, and the chip was optimized for Sony’s image sensor. Additionally, the “optimized” image sensor reportedly features a new function called “QDOL4 (Quad Digital OverLap 4)”, which combines four types of exposure for each frame to enhance HDR effects. Sony’s IMX800 and IMX989 sensors are said to be compatible with this new feature.

It’s possible that the customized image processing capabilities of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Xperia 1 V could be related to this new feature in Sony’s image sensor. While details about the device remain scarce, this could be an exciting development for those interested in photography and image processing capabilities on a smartphone.

Two separate leaks have recently surfaced online for the Xperia 1 V: one containing CAD-based renders, and another allegedly depicting a live image of the device. In addition, a variety of protective cases for the device have also been circulating online.

A recent leak has also provided us with the first glimpse of the products’ prices, and unfortunately, it appears that these devices may come with an even heftier price tag. According to reports, the Xperia 1 V is set to hit the market with a price tag of $1599 in the US and €1399 in the UK, indicating that the device may be a premium offering with high-end features. It’s worth noting that these prices are consistent with the device’s predecessor, suggesting that Sony is continuing its tradition of offering high-end devices at premium prices.
